Tower Block

Vertical concrete
stretches high
Above the Liverpool sky
A symbol of the working class
For all to see

In every city in Britain
And beyond
they stand
by day windows send signals
of glinting sunlight
At night a neon array
of decay

When lifts are temporarily broken
So are the lives
of some who abide there
stuck behind thick walls
isolated from the hustle
and bustle
of city life

Aching legs
too old to climb
the grafitti laden steps
the smell of pee
heavy in their nostrils

They wait in hope
for a glimpse of the outside world
empty faces staring
from distant glass panes
glancing the life below
whistling wind
through lift shafts
a symbol of the coldness
of their isolation

tiny figures
in the huge concrete block
of decay
a symbol of the working class
for all to see

by day the sunlight
sends signals
at night the neon shines forth
to highlight their plight
a neverending reminder
to the city

standing tall
against the sky
Symbol of the working class
