Artist's Description

This image, Fairfield Remembers the Stem Cell is one of the Royal series of images, initially captured at an outdoor music festival in Victoria’s central highlands during the 2006 Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

The title refers back to Melbourne’s Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital which closed in the early 2000s. Like many former TB sanitoriums, Fairfield was located on prime real estate opposite, in this case on the banks of the Yarra River, on a site regularly frequented by a peacocks and other exotic birdlife. As well as being a specialist hospital, Fairfield was also the initial home of the Burnet Institute, one of the world’s leading research centres on HIV/AIDS and infectious diseases.
