Happy New Year

A copy of this painting called “New Year’s Eve in a Restaurant” is on my desk right now and it’s a lovely example of the French School, taken from the magazine La Vie Heureuse in 1912…they are having the time of their lives and I hope you all will have a wonderful New Year’s Eve too…..

Happy New Year…2010 has been wonderful…you all have made it so and I wish you the best for 2011….

Party For Your Art's Sake...

I just read this article in American Artist and thought I would add an excerpt here just for a few days…It’s an intriguing idea and one which I’m sure many of us would love to explore……

We are in a social time of the year. Holiday parties, galas, end-of-the-year revelries—there are celebrations galore. What’s great about such occasions for artists, in addition to seeing friends and family, is that if you can sit back and look, you’ll find engaging and complex social interactions and compositions. Observe with your artist’s eye and you’ll find people whose body language and expressions tell their stories for them. Strangers becoming acquainted, romance taking hold of couples, uproarious laughter, maybe a little drama—the gamut of emotions and actions you’re likely to witness is wide and var

Nothing We Create is Truly Original....

The following article was excerpted for Fine Art Views and was written by Brian Sherwin in the first person

Thinking to myself today I pondered on the issue of originality. It is not rare for me to find individuals making bold charges online about how their art or opinion is original— and just as many more who are quick to suggest the opposite in response to said bold claims. At the heart of the issue I’m left asking, “Does it matter?”.
I’ve decided that originality, if anything, is a specter casting itself over society as a whole— just as it has always done
.

What is important is the manner in which artists and art critics convey their personal adaptations of past ideas and influences.

The hard-line approach that so many people tend to have concerning how they define originality alarms

Grey Matters

As the graying of America progresses and the baby boomers begin to enter their twilight years, the US government and other agencies are deep in discussion over issues of physical and mental health care; social security, retirement and pension benefits, and attitudes and policies on aging. Traditional solutions to the challenges listed above are not sufficient. A plethora of programs from “lifelong education” to more user-friendly assisted-living facilities have been created to help Americans cope with aging. It is important to understand how issues pertaining to aging affect artists and shape opinions about artistic production.…

As artists age, they face a variety of issues that may affect their personal lives as well as their artistic practice. Matisse worked from his wheelchair with a se

Girl with an IPod

A large and striking portrait of the head of a girl wearing earphones with eyes downwards focusing on the music on her iPod is the favourite painting of visitors to this year’s BP Portrait Award exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery….This year, a record 25,980 votes were cast between 24 June and 5 September 2010, and the overall winner was “iDeath” above, which received 4,127 votes
Painted in oil on acrylic the portrait is by Michal Ožibko, an artist and art director from Prague, Czech Republic…
The painting shows the stylization of Jana, a school friend who Michal thought was an interesting person. She is shown in a large head-and top-of-shoulders study with her hair centre-parted and side-bunned behind her ears from which two earphone wires drop to the edge of the canvas. Her eyes

How to Protect Your Rights and Know Your Responsibilites on the Internet

I just got this info from a newsletter I subscribe to…I copied it here because I think it’s valuable info that we need to protect our work…please take down the info as I won’t keep this here very long

You can search inside the book on Amazon and at first glance I saw that there are chapters on how to protect your online content, protecting your technology, using other people’s material, monitoring your relationships with online visitors, social net working sites etc….

You need to know your rights and responsibilities on the Internet

Million Dollar Art

Want to see what sell for 1.24 million these days? I don’t see much difference between this and our own dear Bernard Lacocque’s work…Except I like his work better….…

Below is the artspeak from the Saatchi Gallery….

Check out the rest of her work…it’s an eye opener…gruesomely so… click here, then click search on the next page Marlene Dumas

Jule-die Vrou is a disembodied portrait painting framed in extreme close-up; only the model’s eyes and lips are fully rendered attributes of seduction and sexuality. The rest of the painting is obliterated by a corpulent fleshy pink, suggestive of femininity, sin, violence and womanhood. The contrast between representation, and abstraction suggests a psychological disparity, where morality, representation, and social convention are questioned.

SEVEN DAYS IN THE ART WORLD

I just bought this book today and I’d like to invite any body who loves reading, to join me in a kind of informal RB book club to read it and compare notes on the contents…from what I have read so far, it is very enlightening…each chapter represents one day, and it’s very easy to read…if you want to learn how to market your work or even if you just want a fun and interesting read, this book is a must…the author is Sarah Thornton…below are some excerpts from Amazon…

From Publishers Weekly
The hot, hip contemporary art world, argues sociologist Thornton, is a cluster of intermingling subcultures unified by the belief, whether genuine or feigned, that nothing is more important than the art itself. It is a conviction, she asserts, that has transformed contemporary art into a kind of alternati

It's finally here and I'm really pleased.....

You saw my office…well this is where I paint..
It’s finally in the bookstores and I can now reveal my newly decorated studio as one of the inspiring spaces featured in Studios Magazine’ Summer 2010 issue…the editors had sworn me to secrecy back in the spring and I could not show the layout to any one till after publication date…
I am really pleased with the layout…I will show close-ups when I add it to the Creative Spaces group…below is the cover of the magazine and the two page spread of the painting area of my studio…you will note that I was in the throes of the cherry series at the time, and that Redbubble is given a nice advert on the page as well…I will provide more details with the close-ups later on…you’ll have to buy the magazine to read the story though
and yes I am a really tidy

Coty Prestige Launch and Janis Zroback

Well the long awaited event is now over and it was very enjoyable…
Over two afternoons, RedBubbler and Photographer Marion Bendeth and I presided over the launch of Coty Prestige’s new fragrances….while Marion lent her expertise in advising shoppers which fragrance suited their personalities and life style, I painted on site and as each purchase was made autographed the cards I was commissioned to design by Coty Prestige to match each fragrance…..the cards were offered as gifts with purchase…(by the way almost everyone told me they were going to frame them, so I signed them on the back…these are the earlier format cards)…the setting was lovely, and tremendously busy with Saturday shoppers in this our most exclusive dept store…
I did six paintings while on site some of which I have added to

My Anniversary

Through The Gate

On the 4th March 2008 I joined Redbubble and my artistic life and to a certain extent my life in general, took a very different turn…
I had found RB through reading the posts on Empty Easel, and thought “why not?”
I was already listed on a number of artists’ sites and thought “this will be just another community of artists to join”…
The first thing that was striking about RB was the absence of advertising and the ease of negotiating the site…uploads were fast as well…a real boon as I don’t like waiting…
But soon I came to the real reason most of us love RB…the community….the uncompromising support for each other’s endeavours, and also for me, the perfect venue to show the collections of work I do including my main portfolio…
I was also given the opportunity to write about art,

Is it time to add a tracking system?

Lately I’ve been hearing about how many people have not received their RB orders…this has happened to me more than once and I am beginning to wonder if items are being stolen somewhere in transit…this must result in horrendous expense for RB….do you agree that maybe it’s time to add a tracking system?…if so you will need to add your vote..please click the link below

Not really, but you only have to look at the paintings of seven year old KIERON WILLIAMSON who is self taught and has been painting for only a year to understand why I feel that way. He has just recently sold 16 watercolours in 14 minutes for 17,000.00 sterling setting the world record for the youngest successful painter
