ALCOA's Demolition Derby..

For 2 hours out of every day Pinjarra people stay inside…
behind locked doors and windows..they cringe in fear and hide….
Between 7 and 7.30 in the morning………. if you Dare…..
just stand near the South West Highway..but Please oh Please take care…..

For Alcoa’s Demolition Derby is once again in line…..
the night shift now has ended..the day shift’s right on time…..

There’s Mazda’s and there’s Honda’s …… Fords and Holdens to…
and any second now they’ll be heading straight for you……..
With Carbie’s tuned and engines breathing Fire in the air….
the Alcoa Bus the tortoise,,,,,,,Cars and Motor bikes the Hare….

They show no fear or favour..sheer guts is what it takes….
if your a slightly nervous’ll just end up with no brakes….
The ‘Boys in Blue" are absent…just nowhere to be found….
they know when they are beaten..and like the fox have ’gone to ground’…

But hush its 7.30 and there racing right on time….
A Honda now is in the lead the rest are all in line…
A Holden starts to overtake a Mazda on a curve..
there’s a motor bike up front of him, he’ll surely have to swerve..
for theres some poor @$^#%&$ who’s late for work coming the other way…
and just how he’ll avoid this lot is very hard to say….
NOW there’s a Man who’ll show you this Derby is a breeze
he ‘misssed’ 4 sheep….3 tree’s and a fence and he did it with such ease…!!
But back to the race..the lead has now been taken by a Ute….
with twin exhausts and Carbies chromed it really is a beaut….
They’ve just reached the Sou West Highway and this race is nearly done..
just 10 min more to Mandurah and I think the Ford has won….

Now Peace will reign for a little while and the dust will settle down…
but..! just when you think its over .the Big Trucks come to town…..!!!
They say that they are Gentlemen..these Company Truck Drivers,,,
and there’s no one to belie this… for they leave no Sane survivors….
Theres a Game they play….where its 10 points if they can scare a Biker..
and its 25 if they can scare the pants right off a Hiker….
there’s 30 points for every inch between their truck and YOU…..!!
and they get 2 kegs and a bonus if they scare a Boy in “Blue”….

Now I’ve let the time slip by me its just gone right out the door…..
The Demolition Derbies on..the Mad Hours here once more…
The sheep have run for cover….there’s no thought of limb or life
and they only gave a passing thought when they telephoned the ’Wife"

Tonight they have a REASON….!!… and the sight is awe inspiring…….
there not quite sure just ‘who’ it is but “somebodies” retiring….So the Derby will be on again..the fastest yet and GOOD…..they’ll head on down the Highway and out to Ravenswood……
The Beer will flow so freely there will be no thought of sorrow…
and the Demolition Derby will be ON again tomorrow…….

Artist's Description

Alcoa has several Minesites in West Australia one being just outside Pinjarra a small Country town…….twice each day this demolition Derby is run 7 days a week….
When an Alcoa Worker retires Alcoa ‘shouts’ (buys the beer) for a farewell for the section the retiree works in….this is usually at the “Ravo” the Ravenswood Hotel
halfway between Pinjarra and Mandurah….so there is even more reason to “get there first”………
This Poem was published in our local paper…Alcoa tried to have it stopped…
I even recieved a ‘warning’ from the local “boys in Blue..” that I should not ridicule them"….??…….I rarely listen to that sort of advice…lol Enjoy…
