Old Toms Bush Shack.......

Far…Far up the Highway out on a long dusty track..
standing amongst the derelict mines..
you’ll find old Toms bush shack….

Its made from old pieces of iron…and it stands there all alone…..
it was never designed by an Architect..but to Tom….
well ……..it was Home…..

it had a door but no windows…….an old fireplace made of tin….
a hole in the roof was his chimney, when it rained..well the rain
just leaked in…..
Standing alone in one corner..was Toms old iron bed……
on it ……. two worn out old blankets
and a pillow for his head…..

Toms door was always open……no need for lock or key…
and Tom would always welcome you with a cup of ‘Billy" tea….
Old Tom was a tall gentle Giant, that time had simply passed by..
but while old Toms shack is still standing then old Tom
will never die………
For Old tom will always be out there , but now he’s no longer alone,
he’s there with his Friends and his mates of the past..
for Old Tom has at last gone home…..

One day I’ll go back to Mt Magnet….I’ll drive up that long dusty track..
and I know Tom will be standing there …waiting …..at the door of his old iron shack…

Artist's Description

There was no water on the land that Tom had his claim so my Family and I would take water to him 2 ……5 gal drums this was used for everything..drinking..washing and panning his ‘findings’ the ‘tailings’ he worked so hard to get…..but used so sparingly………..Some days Tom would tell us he knew we were coming…the “birds” would tell him ..and he ALWAYS had a pot of Billy Tea ready and waiting…..he scared hell out of me the first time i saw him…lol he stood 6’ 2" tall had a long beard
and mostly unwashed clothes….but I learned what a Gentle Giant he really was…..
The corrugated iron for his shack he ‘found’ god knows where……the fireplace was made from 2 bumper bars again found somewhere on the ‘track…we took him the bed complete with blankets..he kept 2 because he slept in his clothes so that he was always ready for the “Chinese” he ’thought’ came in the night to take his gold….
which he kept in various dried milk tins hidden in the ground around his ‘claim’….
After he died the local cop asked me to go look to see if I could find these…I took friends with me but we never ever found them..so they are still there…..probably now returned to the land they came from….

Many of you who have recently joined Rb may not know that I do write things other than my ramblings….so I shall repost some of my Colonial Aussie verses…..just so you know I can write other than things on Psychiatry…lolol
