A Prospector and His Son............

A Prospector and His Son……….
..A cry went up through the diggings, another big strike had been found.
the old prospectors back was bent double as he dug with his son in the ground,
For he knew one day they’d be lucky, they’d find their pot of Gold
“just dig a little bit further Lad, we’ll be rich long before you grow old……
Just dig a little bit further Lad and the earths precious treasure we’ll share,
one day we’ll sit back and remember, the kids and our mates buried there..
They shouldn’t have died so young Lad, they’d so much to give to these lands,
they came full of Hope..full of promise..of the Gold they would find with their hands.
Just dig a little bit further Lad, the Golds there you’ll find it…you’ll see…
theres a great Big Golden Nugget just waiting for you and for me….
Put a little more weight on the pick Lad, and we’ll dig out this last bit of ore,
we’ll fill up the buckets and haul them up top , then we’ll climb down and fill up some more….
Now climb up and work the windlass Lad and we’ll haul this ore to the top,
then we’ll dolly and pan the days load Lad, and when the suns gone we’ll stop.
Now when the days toil was over and the dirt had been washed from their hands
they sat and remembered their friends and their Mates who had died for the Gold in this land……………..
The Old Man said..”lay down and rest Lad for I know your tired and sore…..
the Gold will still be there tomorrow and we’ll go down and dig out some more…
As the old Man sat quietly remembering, his eyes came to rest on his son…
his mind wandered back to another old shack and a wife and 3 children…now gone..
He knew the gold Fever was in him…he could never give up and go back
his days had been spent ..back broken and bent….now his soul would live on in this shack………….
The Lad stood alone at the graveside…..and he looked at the stones all around..
he heard on the wind his dad whisper………….”go and dig for that gold in the ground
just dig a little bit further Lad and the earths treasure trove will be found, and sometimes think of us resting here Lad…….for we died for that gold in the ground……………………………..

Artist's Description

My collection of Colonial verse tries to show ‘LIFE" on the goldfields in the early days……….I sometimes think I was born out of…’time’ and should have been an early Pioneer, but really do not think I could have coped with the conditions that the Pioneers were presented with……and so I offer my verse to you….in the hope of sharing my thoughts and feelings ..because yes ..I FEEL the spirit of these men and women……..
