The Pretender

The words got stuck in her throat. As much as she wanted to, she could not verbalize them.

Pain surrounded her thoughts and she could find no peace. She found no words to describe the agony that gripped her. Perhaps she does not want to know the words. Then she would have to look at it and feel it. She wants to disguise the pain and hide it away. She does not want to have to deal with it or face it head on. But keeping the pain at a distance gives her no comfort. Its murky darkness threatens to invade every happy thought, every forced smile. She cannot even pretend that it does not exist because it continues to grow with each passing moment.

He called her again today and asked her how she was. She cleared her voice, hiding her tears and answered him, telling him … I am fine. It was not the words she said that hurt but what she could not say that tears her apart.
