Artist's Description

I cannot leave it alone I keep picking at it. Tweaking it.
It’s a website, intended to assist the Maroubra Bay High School 50 Year Reunion committee, in alerting all ex-students to the reunion, being held 7th March, 2009, in the Shannon Room, AJC, Randwick.
It’s not fancy dress.
There is no theme. Although that was discussed.
It’s just meant to mark the 50th year since fate threw us all together, when Maroubra Bay High School was opened, in March, 1959.
One of the first co-educational high schools, with girls joining the boys, (Most of us transferred from South Sydney Boys Junior High) only in First Year.
So the first school dance, was attended, in quite a few cases, by boys and girls from the same school.
I have the impression that, in those years, late fifties, early sixties, it was the case that (For example like Sydney Boys High and Sydney Girls High) boys and girls were not allowed anywhere near each other, except when there was a dance.
I met this young lady at a birthday party, given by one of the girls at our new school and took her to the school dance.
This painting is based on a black and white photo, taken at another birthday party, later, which was Fancy Dress.
My attempts at dressing up like a hippie, was not as spectacular as her success at coming dressed as a gypsy.
With my mind constantly on the reunion and the website and my iMac and photo albums and slide boxes being constantly churned over to illustrate and hopefully enhance the website, this week’s painting just had to be on this theme!
