Artist's Description

Our parents exchanged residences, in the mid-fifties, in Gouda, the Netherlands. The two families clicked. Went on a holiday together. The men attended an information evening, re: Australia.
in April, 1956, the two families boarded the migrant ship, Johan van Oldenbarnevelt. I was 12. She was 6.

That’s when we first slept in the same room. Rather than four males in one cabin and four females in another. Our parents arranged with a couple, returning to Australia, that she and I share with them and our parents shared the other cabin.

In Australia, after arriving in May, 1956, we moved through for different migrant hostels. Were in the same one, for our last stay in one of those ex-army camps.

Then the families bought an old house, together.
There, in particular, it felt, to me, like I had a little sister.

The house was sold and the two families bought home units (apartments) next to each other.
That’s why she was sitting on my bed, talking to a little girl, who was visiting.
In 1967, she and a girlfriend felt like seeing what the Netherlands were like, from which their parents had taken them whem they were little, to live in Sydney.
In 1968, the parents followed her and she stayed in the Netherlands.

Last week, her mother and I had yet another, lively conversation, via the internet and Skype, about those years and how they’d been.
(I borrowed that last phrase from the C.&W. song: Crystal chandeliers, with a minor change.)
It motivated me to paint this picture.
The mother and I agreed that, contrary to what was always seen as inevitable, the girl and I did not end up together.
For the mother and me, this picture represents one of those cross-roads moments in our lives.
We both agreed that she and I make a great brother and sister but we have both found people, along the way with whom we had other things in common.
Life’s so complicated!!
Just to be clear. There are two great people in my life who would not have been here, if the other road had been taken and their mother is still a good friend.
