Going Home

owlspook gathered her friends around her by the wood stove … It’s time for another story, she said … a short one but a true one I’m told and the ravens never lie … it happened not now but later in the time of man when the old world was most forgotten .. how is this so that this is a future story? if this question interests you then ask the ravens they know .. but now only get comfy and listen … and owlspook began ……..

Katrina sat down in front of the fireplace and opened the journal. It was over a year since Carlie and Edmund disappeared … strange times, she thought, and sad that her cousins were lost in the Wildlands… she would never give up hoping they would be found still it seemed almost hopeless … Katrina brushed that thought from her mind and set her attention back to the journal sitting now in her lap.

It was bound in leather and beginning to crumble a little at the corners. The Watchers told her it was found in an old desk in Edmund’s attic. A note left in the sitting room led them to it and since she was next of kin they brought it to her. No one payed much attention to the journal which in itself was a bit curious but it was probably nothing more than a copy of the chronicles of Jack the Wanderer that every family seemed to have in their library. Regardless she opened the book and began to read …

The story it told was of children lost in time to where elves and dwarfs and goblins lived .. very much a Tolkien tale or like the one by CS Lewis, Katrina was delighted because she liked such tales but as she continued there was a familiarity about the characters … not as if she had read it before but more like she was there before…

Now Katrina was smart enough to understand that a good story can take you into it as if you were there but this was different … it made her feel a bit uncomfortable… impossible she thought … but continued reading …

The next morning her aunt, Elainia, came to call and the house was empty. Thinking she had left early on some errand Elainia decided to wait in the sitting room for her niece. It was there on the floor she found a journal written in undecipherable script with a photograph of Katrina dressed in Wildland garments and carrying a sword. But the strangest thing if you looked close were Katrina’s ears …

owlspook stopped and told her friends as she reached behind her bringing forth an old leather-bound journal that the raven delivered this to her not long ago … the tale is true and the proof is here … upon opening the journal she drew out an old photograph of a young elven girl dressed in Wildland clothes and carrying a sword. … and the journal was written in elven script well known now but forgotten in the time of man … see, owlspook said, and her friends gathered closer to see for themselves ….

I couldn’t help it, owlspook said, I saw the photograph and it told me a story and that’s that … then, with a big flourish of flapping wings, owlspook took flight heading for the nearby grove …

you must (ah I so do order lol) … please do check out Hans’ work … I can’t put into words how his work makes me feel except to quote what he quoted (from Oscar Wilde if I remember correctly and do correct me if I’m wrong)

“I mean by a picture a romantic dream of something that never was and never will be – in a light better than any light that ever shone – in a space no one can define or remember, only desire.”

ah yes, do check his dreams for perhaps they are also all our dreams of “what never was and never will be” but could have been and just maybe should have been …

owlspook calling over the wind said … and probably is somewhere …. (smile)
