Artist's Description

At the northwest corner of Copley Square, stands the “New” Old South Church. Built in 1875, this is the third home for a congregation that first gathered in 1669 and went on to baptize Benjamin Franklin in 1706, minister to America’s first published black poetess Phillis Wheatley, Elizabeth Vergoose said to be the Mother Goose of nursery rhymes and Revolutionary War patriot Samuel Adams. This National Historic Landmark underwent unexpected renovations in 2011 when vibration from construction in the underlying subway station created cracks in the walls that ran from the church’s foundation to the roof.
