Artist's Description

This looks like so many of the “practice” sun shots I took through a solar filter before the eclipse. But sadly, it is not. This is the sun when the air is thick with smoke.

We cut our Oregon trip a few days short because the fires in Oregon, Washington, Idaho filled the air with smoke. We’d planned to visit Crater Lake but for days the Park Service webcam literally went white or, at best, showed hazy outlines that hinted at a landscape. When they closed the park’s North Entrance due to spreading fire, that was our cue to head back to Portland for an early flight home.

That’s when we heard about the Eagle Creek Fire. Unlike the Crater Lake fire which started from lightning, Eagle Creek started with a 15-year-old illegally, illogically “playing” with fireworks (?!!!?) With unusually dry conditions, fire quickly spread through the mighty Columbia River Gorge bringing major evacuations, closures, danger from tree and rock slides, spreading smoke and ash to Portland and beyond.
