Dimitsana village is built on a mountain slope above the river Lousios, at about 950 m elevation on the mountain range of Taygetus. The village has a school, a historical library, several churches, a post office, an open air water-power museum, an open amphitheater, hotels and a square.
During the Greek independence war of 1821, much of the library was destroyed, as the Greeks needed the paper to make “fysekia” at the 14 gunpowder mills of Dimitsana, who worked day and night supplying the freedom fighters. For this reason Dimitsana called “powder keg of the nation”. After 1960 most of the inhabitants, migrated and settled in America, Australia and elsewhere.
