Limeni (Greek: Λιμένι) is a village on the Mani Peninsula in Peloponnese, Greece. Limeni is situated on Limeni Bay which is a mile or two north of Areopoli, the capital of the Deep Mani.
During the Greek War of Independence, between 1821 and 1832, Limeni was the home town of the most important clan in Mani, the Mavromichalis. In 1831, Ioannis Kapodistrias (the first head of state of independent Greece and he is considered the founder of the modern Greek State and the founder of Greek independence) ordered the imprisonment of Petrobey Mavromichalis, the Bey of the Mani Peninsula, one of the wildest and most rebellious parts of Greece. This was a mortal offence to the Mavromichalis family, and on October 9, 1831 Kapodistrias was assassinated by Petrobey’s brother Konstantis and son Georgios on the steps of the church of Saint Spyridon in the town of Nafplion, the first national capital of modern Greece.
In Limeni nowadays, the Mavromichalis’ castle has been restored by the local council to what it looked like 200 years ago. The little port, in the summertime, harbours over 100 yachts.
