A Common Loon Series of Photographs

I was given a rare glimpse into a loon’s bathing ritual, then posturing in a territorial stance to protect a nearby nest. The nest was built on what appears to be a nesting platform built by someone on the lake. This provides a safe place for the loons when shorelines are heavily populated.

Photography gives us so many unique experiences that take us down a path of discovery. While I’ve seen many loons over the years on Lac Bernard, this is the first time I’ve been able to observe these behaviours and capture them on my camera.

With my D7100 I took over 65 consecutive shots while my stepmother patiently tried to keep the boat off the rocks and a safe distance from the loons. My favorites are now posted on Red Bubble.
