Photographically this is not a great image, nor is it a sight most nature and animal lovers would like to see. I have been monitoring the great blue heron rookery in Tsawwassen, British Columbia, for many weeks, and have many images here on RB from there. Recently, while photographing baby herons on their nests, I witnessed this scene. I was about to pack up my photography gear after shooting baby herons with their mothers, when I heard a horrible, deep gutteral scream, that sounded so human. I watched and waited, to see a bald eagle emerge from the forest with a baby heron clutched in its talons. Though bleeding, the young heron was obviously alive, and minutes away from a horrible death. I love bald eagles, and blue herons, but this is imagery that is painful for me to capture, and to upload. I simply want to record what I saw, and photographed.

Shot in Delta, British Columbia, Canada, using a Nikon D700 with a Nikkor f4 600 mm lens and 1:4 teleconverter on a large Gitzo tripod using these settings: ISO 1000, EV -0.33, WB manual, aperture f20, shutter 1/800.
