It is not easy for great blue herons to land in a rookery that is located in a pretty dense forest. They must manoevre through trees and branches to get to their nests. This bird decides to land on a tree branch as if he were a song bird, and in the process looks quite hilarious. This is not a common pose.

The image was captured at a great blue heron rookery in Delta, British Columbia, Canada, close to the mouth of the Fraser River. I was using a Nikon D700 with a 600 mm lens and 1.4 teleconverter on a large tripod (ISO 1000, EV 0, manual WB, f5.6, 1/800 s).
