At Peace

I opened my soggy eyes this morning but it was still dark,
Then I touched my dog’s opened mouth and heard no bark.
When the blanket only covered half of my side I sighed,
Reached and touched the empty space and didn’t fight it.

The sun finally smiled at me through the window pane,
It shadowed my sorrow and left me with no pain.
It had been months since I had acknowledge I was alone,
The tears had penetrated my face and turned it to stone.

The black clothes I had been wearing suddenly had color,
As my dog’s tail waggled since this time I didn’t holler.
Music filled the room as the alarm and radio came alive,
I knew it was a heavenly message send by my loving wife.

My face was a joy to my friends as I proceeded with work,
They surprised me after hours as I heard the bottle’s cork.
A toast for the return of a long lost friend and colleage,
One that had finally come to terms with the answers he
seeked.
