Still Embattled In Time

I saw his face from the corner of my eye.
He knew his time had come to say goodbye.
There he lay with a bullet lodged close to his dying heart.
It was a very sad time for new friends to part.
We had met not too long before the firefight.
And I had no explaination of what was wrong, or what was right.
I closed his eyes with the touch of my hand.
In a distant place beyond our own home land.
I took his dogtags and looked at his name.
Feeling my passion for life was about to change.
I carefully proceeded to my next military sworn task.
Hoping I would not be the next soldier sent home in a cask.
Many familiar days followed that grieving sad day.
As my own embattled heart sank deeper along the way.
After a year of fighting I returned home with a smile.
But I haven’t done that for quite a very long while.
I am troubled everyday when there explodes yet another bomb.
Terrorist that we know not from where they come.
