The Copper Penny

The Copper Penny

On the street pavement I noticed the copper penny lying still,
Somehow I had forgotten its value as I picked it up with my skill.
With such crises in my world it didn’t seem like it was worth anything,
Troubles abound and surrounding me I figured what good luck could it bring?

In my pocket it went as I twirled it with my fingers as no one could see,
My mind thought about my past and that’s where my daydreaming came to be.
Back in time I could buy many things to eat as I wandered walking in the street,
People around me would smile and wave and some would shake a hand to greet.

I thought to myself how lucky I was to find a penny with such historic history,
Of times of depression and now living in the modern world was a memory.
Then I thought about the lost of my wife, whom I meet on the year of this penny,
And my tears flowed from my eyes with the happiness together that were plenty.

Soon the one cent was out of my pocket as I saw the face on the copper coin,
I smiled because what a treasure of our two boys that came from fruits of loin.
All those possibilities with the hard labor from my hands as I worked to earn,
So I cleaned the copper penny because I remember all the lessons learned.
