Lenny With The Wooden Leg

Lenny With The Wooden LegA little boy with only one shoe and crouched down with his back leaning on the trunk of a little pine tree was in a deep tired sleep. He had been desperately trying to finish decorating it before the break of day. During the night he had rounded up all the decorations he had found in people’s trash cans. He was a homeless boy with one wooden leg and so only one shoe was sufficient. The snow was beginning to fall as he sat there with torn dirty clothes. He had often been seen wondering the streets of New York City, but never really stayed put long enough for anyone to help him.Lenny was the name of the crafty 12 year old lad that slept in the woods near by and this was going to be his second year of living alone. The year was nineteen sixty two and for him walking around with a wooden leg was getting tougher by the day as his body was growing. His parents had died in an accident during a snow storm and an old man had rescued him before the car plunged down a bridge that had crashed into. The old man lived in the mountains and had brought him up and cared for him for a couple of years before he died of old age.The young boy had visions of celebrating a Christmas holiday one more time knowing that his chances of surviving the life he had was taking a toll on him. Many days he wondered in the woods in search of something to eat and sometimes even depended on kills made by wolves. He would drag whatever meat he could scavenge and take it to the shag the old man would share with him. Since the death of him, he had made due with whatever was left in the one room shag. Then one day it caught on fire and thus Lenny begins living in the dens of wolves that were vacant but the long winter had made it impossible to continue. And so, he ventured to the city of New York in search of a better life. While the boy slept the people passing by marveled at how the simple small pine tree had transformed into a beautiful Christmas tree. People there had never seen something so beautiful in a public view. Many folks there lived private lives and had never thought of decorating the city. Two tall men picked up the nearly frozen boy and took him to a doctor to be examined. He was not well, and many city people were told that he would not live after suffering from frost bite. Word soon got around and even though Lenny was in a coma, they stopped by and left what little money they could spare to pay for the doctor’s expenses during the three weeks he had been laid out.On the 25th of December Lenny woke up to the sounds of caroling voices singing songs of Christmas outside a window. He was not aware of what was going on since his long three week sleep and with the serious condition he was recovering from. His room was warm and it was bigger than the one room shag. His clothes was clean and new and even his body had been bathe. Food by the bag full was sitting on a table and there were even presents nearby. However, being able to see the snow outside from his window frightened him because he knew nothing of this place. For a moment his thoughts took him to believe that he had died and gone to a better place, until a doctor and a nurse took him by his hands and sat him up. They told him everything and then they invited him to stand up and go outside. At first he hesitated because he knew the wooden leg the old man had made for him had rotted and was uncomfortable because of the size. Lenny looked down at his feet and noticed that he had two shoes on and lifted his new pants to reveal his new wooden leg. He immediately rose off the bed and tried to run, but he was too weak and his new leg was not made to run. He needed to adjust to wearing two shoes and to the new bigger size of a new leg. He was helped by the doctor and nurse to the door of this little hospital that was taking care of him. As they opened the door a large group of people had gathered outside to welcome him in his recovery and into their hearts. The city people wanted him to look all around because the whole city was decorated in Christmas colors. The city people greeted him and they lead him to the pine tree he had decorated himself when he first set foot in New York. Lenny taught the city how to really celebrate Christmas in the joy of decorating and sharing. From there on the great city of New York has had parades and a day for the lighting of their huge city Christmas tree. And as for Lenny, the whole city became his family on the twenty fifth of December 1962.Copyright © Oscarelizondo Thursday December 03,2009 10:32 AM
