Peace Be With You Too

I remember an encounter with my enemy in the Republic of Vietnam many years ago. It seemed like the enemy had no age limit or gender. Many times we would find the mother and father harboring their own son because they knew we were looking for him. It was hard to understand for us because we were the enemy on their soil. Our families were back in America, and the United States was our country.

We didn’t see it like they did, God help us if the war had been on our soil.
As we walked through the villages many of the people would greed us and thank us for setting them free. I failed to see it then because the war had been going on for ten years and there was no peace. Soon as we would leave the vietcong would settle right back in and torcher the familes and rob them of their kids. Those same kids would be trained to kill us at any cost.
On one operation we were attacked by the enemy that was well hidden. It was sort of an ambush because we were ready for it. They opened up with mortars and machine gun fire. We fired back with deadly accuracy and the fire fight did not last long. We could hear the cry for help from the enemy as the wounded screamed in pain. We approached cautiously and we could hear them say, “Don’t shoot, don’t shoot, don’t kill me!”
It were the voices of the no more than twelve year old boys that had just shot at us and killed some of our own men. It was a scence like that of a horror movie. Kids, bleeding to death if not already, but with weapons besides them. Innocent looking faces, but with a trainned heart to tear our guts out. It was hard for me to hold them in my arms while the medic came to help. They were dying and how could I hate and love at the same time.
I cried as I closed the eyes of those that did not make it, but I also said, “Peace Be With You!”
