The Worm In The Lettuce

The Worm In The LettuceByOscar ElizondoA farmer finished picking up the patch of lettuce from his field. He was about to pull the trailer with his tractor when he noticed one head of lettuce still out there. All the crates were ready with the exception of one. There was one void spot in one crate and the farmer got off his tractor to retrieve the missing vegetable. When the old farmer reached for the lettuce on the ground a worm came out from the center and bit him on his right hand. "You useless little worm, I am going to pull you out of there and stomp you with my boot! " shouted the angry man.The little baby worm dug deeper inside his home fearing for his life. John, the farmer held the head of lettuce up in the air and tried to peek inside with his right eye. Soon as the eye was close enough the baby worm bit him on his right eye too.

John let go of the lettuce as it rolled down and into a gully full of water.
By the time the angrier farmer regain his sight the worm and lettuce were floating away. " I will make you pay for this, you little useless worm!" shouted John a second time.
The farmer took a hoe from the back of the trailer and used it to reach for the floating lettuce. Once in his grasp, he carefully placed it on a dry area and was about to stomp on the lettuce. However, he remembered his wife telling him, “John, be careful not to dirty the new pair of working boots I gave you. When you come home we are going to the market.”
John removed his right boot and sock and placed his foot just above the lettuce. The frightened little worm saw what the farmer was about to do and he bit him on the right foot too. “Ouch, ouch, ouch, you bit me again you useless little worm!” cried out the farmer.
That evening the farmer went home to his wife with one swollen right eye, one swollen right hand, and one swollen right foot and one head of lettuce. She asked, “John, what has happened to you? You look like you have been in a fight!”
The farmer took a knife from the kitchen drawer and said, “He is in there! The one that did this to me, and I am going to take him out and step on him.”
The farmer’s wife started laughing and said, “Are you trying tell me that the tiny little worm inside the head of lettuce did all of this to you?”
John replied, “Yes, that useless little worm is responsible for my injuries.”
John’s wife said, “Well, let’s see. He is only half an inch long. He gave you a swollen right eye, one swollen right hand, and one swollen right foot. I think he has really been busy. I don’t believe he is a useless little worm like you stated.”
The farmer pouted and went to another room as she whispered under her breath, “I think it’s the other way around.” She then picked up the lettuce with the little worm still inside and placed both of them in a large pickle jar.
Everyday that the farmer comes in from the fields he gets to see the little worm eating away at the lettuce. He swears to his wife that when he looks inside the jar, the little worm is smiling.
