A piece I did in college.
If you’ve ever seen Brad Holland’s work, this will look familiar to you. I was impressed with the surreal nature of Holland’s designs. There was a spookiness about his images, at least to me.
I decided I would find a suitable subject, in this case, crack cocaine.
The ‘person’ is vague. It’s obviously a man but he represents not just men but a professional society, or better yet, a civilized society who allow themselves to be tempted by the newest drug form (this was the 80’s keep in mind).
As you can tell, he’s defined by a crack vial for a head, dressed very cleanly and has one foot in a christian grave. I didn’t want to go for the plain tombstone, I wanted something that threw in religion too. Maybe because I’m Catholic and we don’t do anything without thinking of wrestling with the religious consequences afterwards.
