Artist's Description

The Shuttleworth Collection’s Sopwith Triplane “Dixie” lands at Old Warden in a cloud of dust and blue smoke from the blipping rotary engine. Built as a modern replica to the original drawings and specification by the Northern Aeroplane Workshops this aircraft was such a triumph of craftmanship that the original designer, Tommy Sopwith, shortly before he died certified it as being the last official production machine of its type. In the Great War this type was used by the Royal Naval Air Service but not by the Royal Flying Corps.
