Artist's Description

A grin from Peter Teichman as he taxies his Spitfire PR.XI PL965/R in after landing at Old Warden for the Shuttleworth Military Pageant in 2013. This is the only airworthy PR.XI in the world. Developed from the F.VIII this mark inherited the larger, pointed tip rudder and retractable tailwheel of its predecessor. The two radiators are a giveaway that the Merlin engine is a later version with a two-stage supercharger. The weapons were omitted and the wing forward of the main spar became an integral fuel tank, this modification giving a phenomenal range of 1,360 miles. The increased range/duration required that to meet the needs of the more powerful Merlin 61 engine a bigger oil tank was needed. To accommodate this the line of the cowling below the engine was lowered giving this mark its distinctive “chin”. Several combinations of cameras were used in its operations with both the RAF and US 8th Air Force from 1943 to 1945.
