Artist's Description

Blue is one image from a series called The Riders that was exhibited at The Centre for Creative Photography, Adelaide (March 2008), the Epson Gallery at Photographic Wholesalers in Hutt Street, Adelaide (January 2009) and The Nexus Gallery in Bellingen, NSW (March 2009) as part of the Sibling Rivalry show.

Blue was the longest exposure of the series. I think it was half a second. The Riders series was shot at the Tour Down Under in Adelaide, South Australia. The series were shot on Kodak color infrared film. See the full series.

Featured in Artistic Motion – Photography 29 April 2015 and again 8 January 2016.

Featured in Pro Peloton Photographers 12 September 2011.

This image was featured in the Conceptual Series Photography group November 2010.

The distinctive colours and grain are characteristic of the film. The motion blur was captured in-camera by using camera panning and slow shutter speeds – ranging between 1/15th and 1/2 second. A 28mm wide angle lens further added to the distortion and impression of speed. The camera was a vintage (early ’80s) Pentax K1000. Digital manipulation was limited to minor contrast correction and dust removal post scanning.
