another kind of sanctuary

the evening spins
i become closely acquainted with my ribs
they squeeze snugly against my lungs
reminding me they are there
I give them a good rub to show them I care
then go ahead and rub my head too
i even put it on the desk
to let it know I am giving it my full attention

my ears ring me
and blinding white puts me in the spot light
my eyes gush to see me
I’m quite popular at the moment
my whole body wants my attention

I give myself over to this consuming embrace
thank god. i say.
thank god…
and put my finger to my lips

another kind of sanctuary

Artist's Description

Sometimes the safest place is in the pain. Just to sit with it and really take it in, feel it, become intimate with it. It doesn’t always have to explode out, damaging the people around me. It can explode in and i can curl myself around it and it can teach me to be still. It can teach me to stay when i would have otherwise run, would have disconnected. It can teach me to touch the softness of my humanity. This is another kind of sanctuary. There are no martyrs here.
