Artist's Description

A small sign pointed a friend and I to a small outcropping of rock with pictographs in Eastern Oregon near Burns. In addition to the pictographs (not pictured), we could see cracks where animals found shelter. We could hear a group of coyotes howling around us. The angled light just prior to sundown turned the lichen on stone to a fiery orange. We could feel the spirits both past and present as we hopped around exploring. When I looked back at my photos, this unplanned shot reveled sprits frozen in stone.
If you can’t see them, rest your eye on the right side where the stone forms a right angle and squares off. This is the nose of a sleeping coyote, move your eye up and to the left and you will see the slit of a closed eye. The vertical crack outlines a pointed ear. The head rests on the ground.
Now look left to the rounded forms. There is an outline and shadows of a face. The spirit wears a hat and was well fed. The dark shadows of the upper right head shape define the eye, nose mouth and cheeks. The person’s right arm slopes back down to the ground. I darkened these shadows in post processing for more definition of what was there.
On another day I went to this place and it was very different. The rocks looked dull and I could not find the forms that appeared as in this photo. The time of day and light shared a moment of magic not to be found again.
