what I loved most...

What I loved the most about home was the smell of Carolina Jasmine on a warm summer afternoon. The fragrance was sweet and heady carried on a light breeze as it drifted up and into our mamosa tree house.

What I loved the most about home were lightning bugs blinking in the twilight. Kids, still in their swimsuits, would laugh and chase each other, chase the bugs to be caught in mason jars with holy lids.

What I loved the most about home was the green glow of twilight as the evening shadows shifted first bright then a lingering glimmer of gold before canceling to black.

What I loved the most about home was floating down the lazy river in an oversized innertube. The only sounds were long legged wading birds, or fish jumping or our own splashing and giggles.

What I loved the most about home were friends, good friends who knew your heart and felt your thoughts in your eyes. Without words they understood. All night we’d lie on the graceful slopping banks of the quiet river. The moon danced on the mirrored surface and we’d watch for shooting stars to make wishes. Secrets told in hushed tones melted into dreams in the velvet night.

What I loved the most about home were watermelon seed fights with my brothers. We were sweet sticky messes in need of sprinklers and a garden hose.

What I loved the most about home was home.
