A whale shark Rhincodon typus , is the largest shark on earth, growing up to 18 metres (60ft) in length. This image was taken by underwater photographer Jacqueline Russell, off of Cabo Catoche Mexico. In this very special area of the ocean wilderness, at certain times each year, it’s possible to see whale shark feeding on the tiny phytoplankton. Snorkelers who don’t crowd the animals, and stay peaceful and calm in the water, can get a wonderful experience with this beautiful gentle giant.
