Sleepless nights

It was hard to sleep that night, after she heard. Three pills did it. More than is wise.

They sunk and pinned her to the bottom of her subconscious. She lay still all night, safe from the unwelcome thoughts circling overhead. Safe from that cringing shame, from sweaty sheets, twisting muscles, kinking joints, fighting apparitions. The usual battles we have with ourselves in the nighttime when no-one is there to save us. The ones we never win. By the time she woke in the morning the thoughts had gone. She pried herself from the floor of her mind, blurry, safe, alone.

Night brings focus, soul searching spotlights, the sharp edges she could cut herself on. In the daytime she can fool herself. The daylight throws long shadows that distort facts, lengthen lines, dull edges. She knows sometimes the worst thing is seeing yourself reflected in the expressions of other people, knowing that they don’t understand. That they never will.
