Saving daylight

They changed the clocks in the last days of her life. She felt, in her confused way, that it gave her more time.

The days drew out luxuriously. She could feel them from behind the blinds. There was room to move in them, although she wasn’t going anywhere. Yet.

In the bright non-evenings, her mind was a street with all the shopkeepers on their way home, floors swept, tills emptied. Neural pathways were blinking off in the dark, one by one.

There was no time to start anything new, only to start again.

The last lucidity behind her, she was in one long day that was every day of her life, from schoolgirl picnics to crumpled funerals.

And the dark in between.
