Artist's Description

If you drive up the A15 from Sleaford to Lincoln, in Lincolnshire, England you will pass a roadside transport cafe behind which, partly hidden by scrub, is this derelict world war II airfield tower .

The tower, the restaurant and the garage opposite, sit on what was RAF Coleby Grange which was occupied mostly by Royal Canadian Airforce Squadron Nos 409 and 410, flying Defiants, Beaufighters and later, Mosquitos.

The perry track which served as the airfield ring road is still visible as well but little else. Looking at the site on Google satellite reveals the 3 Thor (IBM) nuclear missile locations, which were the airfields last use when it finally closed in 1963, but these are now covered by agricultural buildings.

Also see my shot of Duston Pillar which had ten meters lopped of its height to help low flying aircraft from this airfield.

Shot with a Nikon D5100 sporting a manual Tokina SL 400mm f5.6 SD lens set at F11, 1/80 sec ISO 100, mounted on a tripod.

RAW processing was carried out in Photoshop CS6
