By the Old Black Bench

I’ll meet you by the old black bench
At the park
It’s secluded edge

Where the grass that once was lush green
Has been oppressed
Into faded yellow
Scorched
By weeds that loom vainly
And the lifeless disease

Where trees who provided pleasant shade
Now glower the corner
In a blanket of gloom
Forlorn in darkness.
Their branches are wrinkled
Reach out lazily
Overflowing with leaves
Overflowing with a hollow hopelessness

Where the elegant stone path
Has been showered
With a dull topaz dust
That smothers the loud smiles
With a monotonous tone
Of disdain
Prejudice
Lethargy
Drearily drifting
Into a land
Of nightmares of rainbows

Where the remains of tarnished newspapers
Gather along the rusted chain fence
Shivering and wet
Reminiscing on what they could remember
From their old stories
Of depression and a new deal
Of segregation and a king
Of apathy and the collective soul

Where the crumbling sandy leaves
Have fallen to the ground
Gazing up
At the whitewashed sky
At nothing
Watching in despair
Clinging to the years
Where the children played
In their bare feet
Their bare
Unscathed
Unperverted
Undistorted
Feet

Where its side of the sun
Has grown tired of bringing light
And love
And passion
And desire

So the bleak eyes
Of fate
Have settled into their throne
The eyes
That pushed you into a pit
Of soullessness
And the eyes that are your throne

I’ll meet you by the old black bench
Buy some real estate
Because nonchalance always stands
Over top of hate
