Artist's Description

This Marsh Snake, Hemiaspis signata, was a visitor to my daughter’s backyard (spotted by one of her 18 month old twin daughters). Marsh snakes, Black-bellied Swamp Snake, Swamp Snake or Grass Snake are small (rarely exceeding one meter) elapid snakes. Although venomous, are not considered dangerous but they do bite (the first one I ever found gave me a finger bite for not leaving it alone). Bites from this species have been known to cause severe local symptoms such as pain & swelling, with more general reactions such as headaches and nausea also recorded. All bites should still be treated immediately and attended to with correct first aid.
