Love In A Tea Cup

Shop of curiosity, dimly lit within

wall to wall and floor to ceiling,
a museum full of memories
bursting at the seams,
I share with it a love affair so sweet
on this treasure hunt called life

Through cloudy windowpanes
sunlight breaks in, minute dust particles float
in slow motion, air is musty
like a threadbare blanket of time,
I close my eyes and breath it in deeply,

E x h a l e

Eyes wide open and hungry to absorb all
goods sit idle, unwanted, abandoned
a delicately beaded purse protrudes
from behind a stuffed toy
small antique bottles, kitchen jars and vases
tasselled shade of ivory silk rests
carelessly against alabaster lamp
ornate gilded picture frames
precariously hang above,
A chandelier peeks out, urging me on

Further into its shadowy cave
organized chaos permeates
trash and treasure combined
my quest begins, probing, searching
sifting, and seeking
discarded elegance
the incomplete, the neglected
crumbling, cracked, forlorn
worn grandeur of simple practicality
forever timeless

A battered dresser beckons
layer upon layer of folded cloth
boldly they wink at me, cheeks flush
sifting, excitedly I explore
textiles of all description
tablecloths and napkins
washed-out cotton prints
tea-stained floral fabrics, faded ivory chintz
hand stitched ruffles, tucks and gathers
soft velvet, tattered lace
unironed monogrammed linen
damask in worn out mint
dreamy perfect pastel palette
muted hue’s and tones
pale sky blues, faded greys
greens and dusty rose

Beyond the battered dresser
a towering maze presents
chattels mixed and muddled of varying descent
peeling paint on woodwork
rickety legs of chairs
shabby, scuffed, chipped surfaces
need tender loving care

Weaving through this labyrinth
Between narrow passageway
twin rows of tall glass cabinets
stand on parade like soldiers protecting
what they hold from clumsy hands
the wares within them flaunt themselves and flirt
heart quickens, unabashed
for although all things before this were
distinguished lovers too
this is where my true love lies
and no other thing will do

Already picked, I find the piece
that has held my heart for days
an exquisite cup and saucer set
full of elegance and grace
English fine bone china
forget me knots entwined
around the body of the cup
regal rim of gold

At home with my beloved, we are at last alone
we share Earl Grey from same cup
Lip to lips we kiss.
