Auckland

The lives I have passed through
are changing now
the city seems smaller
I’ve aged
it’s hard to decide
where it is that I’m home
what happened to my youth,
my childish outrage?
Where is my anger?
What are my dreams?
Is it me or the city that’s changed?

so many years since I owned these streets
so many loves, so many harsh realities
since a little girl rode home on the six two five,
in the city where she came to life

Across the harbour where the big guns lie
guarding this city of sails by night,
I slept in a cave on Cheltenham beach
while the campfire’s remains washed into the sea

The sunrise on Grafton bridge still sounds the same
the roar from the gully on my unsteady way home
I found family in a strange new place
I found freedom in total disgrace

A Mount Eden summer that changed it all,
the first year that my hometown felt too small
and I contemplated the fates that awaited me
I walked in the cold rain til dawn
