This spiral meditation labyrinth is on the West Rim Trail along the Rio Grande Rift in Taos county, New Mexico. The “Rift” is seen in this photo as a dark line of rocks just below the mountains- that’s about 75 feet away from where this picture was taken, and although you can’t tell from here, it’s a 600-800 foot tear in the earth through which the Rio Grande river runs… a bit deceptive, isn’t it?! Imagine- in places the bike trail is only 20 feet from the sheer drop-off!
This mountain biking and hiking trail is maintained by the Bureau of Land Management.
This labyrinth is a meditation walking path- these are common in the area, and are part of the very spiritual mystique of this part of the the country. This is high desert, at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo mountains rising to 11,000 feet in the distance, this area is about 7000 ft in elevation. The stones used are volcanic rocks, found scattered all over the landscape in this area.
