Artist's Description

This is along the trail at Gator Hook Strand, one of the most beautiful and wild hiking trails in the Great Cypress National Preserve, about 50 miles West of Miami, Florida, in the center of the Everglades.

The trees are Bald Cypress trees, showing their new Spring foliage. The ground below is a limestone marl covered with an organic web and a few inches of water, providing a home for a variety of flowers, sage, and sawgrass. In the trees hang thousands of air plants, starting to bloom.

The “trail” is an unmarked path that leads to about half a mile West of this point, where it vanishes under inches of water… which I’m standing in as I take this shot.

This image was tonemapped using Photomatix from three exposures, taken with a Canon 5D and a Tamron 28-300 VC lens. Final color editing was in Aperture.
