Artist's Description

When krill is abundant at the surface, whales will “lunge feed” at the surface. The whale approaches the surface on its side, jaws gaping, scooping tons of water into its ballooning mouth. The mouth then partially closes and the water is filtered out through the balleen hanging from the roof of the upper jaw.
