Artist's Description

I shot this in the mid 70’s. My family and I were interested in exploring old houses that had been abandoned. This particular house in west central Illinois had been abandoned before it was ever modernized. That is, there were never any electricity or plumbing in the house. I got the idea that it would be neat to make someone think that perhaps a past ‘resident’ was looking in to see who was visiting their home. I had my eldest daughter, then about 13 years old or so, stand in a doorway on the far side of the house, while I pointed the camera (a Yashica-mat 120 with Kodak plus-x film) toward a door near me that had a couple panels out of it. By using full aperture, I was able to cause her to fall completely out of focus in the back ground, and with the back lighting it gave her a ‘nether worldly’ appearance. And for all you digital users out there, and please forgive my constant harping on this, if you never learn to use a camera of any kind manually (that is, turn off all the automatic garbage) you never fully develop the creative potential of photography.
