Artist's Description

It’s not often I am this lucky. It’s not often I find an animal this majestic anywhere in the wild let alone just a few feet off the road. One fall evening as I drove or Trailridge Road through Rocky Mountain National Park, I saw this beautiful animal laying in the later afternoon sun. It was mating season so he was bugling or taking a rest from it.

Thousands of feet below, car were parked around a large meadow were the elk call to each other. People from all over the country park their cars and wait for the elk to appear.

I pulled off the road and found a place between a dozen other cars, pulled my camera and the biggest lens I had and began to shoot. It was magic that the sun was shining on him. The light from the sinking sun sparkled in his eyes and as he stood to look around and at me,

I just kept clicking. I don’t think I’ll ever feel so blessed to have been at the right place at the right time. Wildlife photography take patience and I guess I had some. After all, I had driven up this road every day for a month so finding him wasn’t all luck.

There were a few moments, I thought he might stand up and charge. I knew the risk
