Artist's Description

Set on a hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near the town of Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany Neuschwanstein was built as a ‘country retreat’ for Ludwig II of Bavaria, who covered the cost from his own personal wealth and a bit of an overdraft from the bank!

Soon after his death in 1886. the castle was opened to the public and some 60 million people (I think most of them turned up the day we did!) have paid a visit. It is claimed that Neuschwanstein was the inspiration for Disney’s castle in Sleeping Beauty, but it also famously made an appearance as the home of the evil Baron Bomburst in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, played brilliantly by the late Gert Fröbe.
