Reflected Glory

I glance down at the mirror and feign disbelief,
A mocking smile – Are you talking to me?
Confident, barely a moment’s thought,
Come on then, I breathe, Take your best shot.
D’you know who I am, kid? Feel free:
Test the reflex of the next Bruce Lee.
The Dragon himself – but twice as tough,
Take your best shot, if you’re man enough.
Wax on, wax off – but hear this first:
Get too close and you might get hurt.
I straighten up, flex, and hold his stare,
Swipe a left hook into the air.
I’ll take you on, look at me, tough as they come -
All your worst nightmares rolled into one.
I sting like a bee – like Muhammad Ali,
Rocky Balboa, Apollo Creed.
I talk a good fight, but believe it too:
You better look out when I come at you.
I’m John McClane, Jack Bauer, the best of both,
I taught Jackie Chan everything he knows.
When they say “Mr. President, send in the best”
I’m ready for action, the Van Damme elect.
Precise in my footwork I swing with my right,
We’re very well matched in reach and in height.
Sparring with moves taken straight from the screen,
Each punch returned simultaneously.
A lengthening silence, regular breaths,
Approving regard for the face that reflects.
Save it, we’ll settle this one sometime else -
Besides, you look pretty handy yourself.

This is a poem written for the “In the Moment” theme. Have you ever stared in the mirror for so long you forgot where you were?
