Constructed in 1871. It’s original five-wick lard oil lamp was first lit at sunset, November 15, 1872 behind it’s first order Fresnel lens. The lens was manufactured by the Henry-LePpaute company in Paris, France. Weighing in at 8,000 pounds, the lens is 16 feet tall, 6 feet in diameter. It has 24 flash panels, is composed of 1,008 hand polished lenses and prisms and can produce an illumination of over 500,000 candlepower. It’s flashing characteristic is 1 flash of white light every 10 seconds.

In 1888 the original lamp was replaced by a kerosene lamp. Then in 1926 the lighthouse was provided with electricity. The lamp was replaced by a 1,000 watt bulb and the clockworks that roted the lens, which was operated by weight prior to, was also replaced with an electric motor.

In 1972 the US Coast Guard mounted a 24-inch aerobeacon on the front of the tower and officially retired the Fresnel lens. Although it is still lit on special occasions, such as the annual lighting of the lens which occurs on the closest Saturday to November 15th (The original lighting date).

Standing at 115ft Pigeon Point Lighthouse is one of the tallest in the United States. It is located 5 miles south of Pescadero, California and took it’s name from the ship CARRIOR PIGEON that wrecked there in 1853. To this day, it still does it’s duty of proctecting and guiding mariners who travel along the Pacific coast.

I can’t tell you anything about the guy who showed up and started playing the harmonica while I was shooting, other than it was nice to listen to…
