Artist's Description

This is one of the eeriest places I have ever seen underwater. The Island of Misima, in the Louisiade Archipelago, PNG, is being rapidly uplifted by geological activity. The surrounding ocean is some 700m deep, and the coral reef forms a thin layer on the side of the island before dropping into the blue abyss. Due to the uplift, there is a layer of recent reef limestone that has been lifted some 5-6m out of the water, and now sits right under the rainforest canopy. The regular torrential rain in this area has eroded numerous crevasses in the reef edge, and these extend well into the jungle.

I swam into this crevice , and was amazed to see jungle overhead and cave dwelling reef organisms below. A rain squall began, and I captured this image looking out of the crevice toward the open water as rain drops patterned the surface.
