Artist's Description

A besom leans against the sandstone and marble patterned wall of the gate to the mausoleum Empress Nur Jehan built in Agra for her parents. Her father, Mirza Ghiyas Beg, Emperor Jehangir’s Chief Minister, was given the title Itmad-ud-Daula, meaning ‘pillar of the state’. The mausoleum predates by a decade the nearby Taj Mahal, which it rivals in beauty on a smaller scale.
