Artist's Description

Wagashi is traditional Japanese confectionery. These two examples are a soft kind called jo namagashi that is served in tea ceremonies and usually consists of sweetened red and white bean paste, shaped, coloured and sometimes flavoured according to a seasonal theme. The upper one represents a cherry blossom floating on water and the lower one a cherry blossom bud, complete with yellow stamens. Taken in Kyoto in April 2010.
