Gulf Fritillary, or Passion Butterfly
Agraulis vanillae

This butterfly is called the “Gulf Fritillary” because, according to the wiki link below, it is often seen flying (in migration) over the Gulf of Mexico. They range across the souther US all the way to California and south to Mexico and as far as Argentina!

I was very surprised to see it on the main road, because it’s kind of a rare sight around here, though I’ve seen it a mile or so distant from my neighborhood. And in that location, it’s VERY hard to capture a photo, as they are very skittish. But this one was content to sip from the cups of this little Salvia while I snapped photos. At one point, after hearing the beeps of my camera, he literally turned upside down to look at me to see what I was doing. At that point, he became afraid and tried to hide in the grass! NOT EFFECTIVE! His bright orange colors stand out, and that is what caught my attention. He was glowing in the afternoon sun as he sipped from the Salvia bush. it was such a beautiful sight. But I had to snap fast, as he kept flitting away from the camera’s focus.
